INTERVIEW: “RADIOWAKA CloseUp” On ‘Cyrus Tha Virus’

Posted on Updated on

Chygaga: Can We Meet Cyrus?

Cyrus: Yeso!!! Its ya boi Cyrus Tha virus, Half man, half virus, lean mean rap machine, Cyanide, Onesimus RapOpopulous, Mr No-jimmy-the-cricket, C4, The south south’s Last line of defense!

Chygaga: How did the name Cyrus Tha Virus come about?

Cyrus: The Name cyrus tha virus came from the movie “Con Air”; Cyrus The Virus was the main villain in the movie, played by John Malkovich opposite the hero Nicholas Cage; “tha Virus” part of it kinda stuck cuz I read microbiology PLUS the fact that my personality is infectious! 😀

Chygaga: What is Cyrus Tha Virus’s Full name? Background? Academics?

Cyrus: My full name is Damon Joseph ‘Khume Momoh; I’m from the warrior tribe of the Afemais in owan east local government area of Edo state!(Make sure u insert gladiator soundtrack in this place oh! Loooool); I have a B.Sc in Microbiology from Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma; I’m from a family of 7; 2 parents, 5 kids(3 boys, 2 girls)and I’m the 2nd child. And also I got 6 dogs, 3 toothbrushes, One life, one aim, One goal, One silver bullet! Should I add my criminal background too?hahaha!

Chygaga: As a kid, What type(s) of music interested you?

Cyrus: Basically R&B; loads of boyz II men, jodeci, Tevin Campbell, Aaron Hall, Blackstreet, R kelly BUT I listened to a lot of sir Shina Peters, Ras Kimono, Majek Fashek, Daddy Showkey, Junior and Pretty, felyxx and Mozzyx, Alex O, Alex Zitto,Onyeka Onwenu, Christy Igbokwe, Chris Okotie; My dad made sure I listened to a lot of Nigerian Music during my childhood, because he was a jolly good fellow!lol but I also can see that all this various genres of music has in one way or the other, found itself into the music I put out today.

Chygaga: When and how did you first become interested in music?

Cyrus: Haaaa! Dat one na from very young age oh! Not performing though, but I used to love music, I was a very brilliant child dancer, I was the scourge of parties, always winning all the dancing competitions (I’m sure all the other kids hated me!lol!)….so, I loved music from a very young age, especially Sir shina Peter’s “ACE” album and I used to always wonder how he put all the rhythm, instruments and vocals together to make a whole, unified sound.

Chygaga: What made you realize that music was your path?

Cyrus: Mmmmmmmmm…I think that will be in my 100 level in the university, I mimicked DMX for a departmental party and even students like me started spraying me money in appreciation, and I was like: “mehhnnnnnn, I could make money from this yo! If I can perfect my craft a little bit more, I can actually make some good name and money off this!!”

Chygaga: How would you describe the music that you typically create?

Cyrus: The Kind of Music I do is basically Hip-hop; although its spiced with alota Nigerian Flavors, chants, hooks and languages…its still the same energetic genre, that Hip-hop is; But I must let you know I’m also very good at singing too so, I infuse that into my music also, so it doesn’t just fall fully under Hip-hop, its actually Hip-hop in a mash-up of different sounds, influences etc

CYRUS – She’s So Yoyo

Chygaga: Who are your biggest musical influences?

Cyrus: My biggest Musical influences would be my hunger to be the best that I can be musically and peoples wise, I’d say
DMX( I owe my career to God and this man) , Notorious BIG, Kanye West, The Game and Every artiste who brings something fresh to the table; cuz I actually learn a lot from even the “upcoming” artistes in Nigeria….so I could say for a fact, the Nigerian Sound, The Nigerian music industry influences me too.

Chygaga: What makes your music unique?

Cyrus: When u hear a cyrus song, one thing strikes u: BOOOOOOM!!!!! ENERGY!!! My kind of music embodies the soul and spirit of the south- south so its tenets are very present there; and the way I concoct my chant choruses is strikingly unique to cyrus and in a time plagued by stereotypical vocal delivery, my voice isn’t something u can hear anywhere; also my production and beats is also different, there’s no over embellishment of sounds, just heavy kicks, riotous snares and mad synths….

WATCH: CYRUS – MUGEE (VIDEO)

Chygaga: What else do you do besides music?

Cyrus: Besides music, I’m also into events management, packaging and brand consultancy; I have a flair for looking at a presentation and knowing what’s missing from it; I was also 1st runner-up at Amstel Malta Box Office 2 (AMBO2) so I’m also trying my hand at acting too ( make una tell saint obi and jim iyke say I dey come for dem oh!!!loooool!)

Chygaga: Nice track ‘Mugee’ and also the Video is very cool, but what influenced your decision to shoot a video for Mugee instead of any other track off the mixtape?

Cyrus: Thanx a lot; my decision to shoot “mugee” stemmed from the fact that it didn’t sound like any other song out; it was hard, real, raw, grimy and I didn’t want the champagne-popping, girls-shaking-their-bum bums kinda video; I wanted to re-establish the energy of the south-south at a time the south-south seemed to have lost its soul….and Mugee did just dat! Re-establish the south-south! I am very proud of what the video director “Whitehouse” did; the interpretation of the energy of “mugee” video was on point! We wanted a video that wasn’t ur everyday thing and we achieved that PERFECTLY.

Chygaga: I’ve listened to your track “Swat and BloodHounds” Ft Godwon, A-Q, Pherowshuz, Big T, M.Trill, Boogey & D’Truce Awesome track I must say what was the motivation behind the track and your choice of artistes?

Cyrus: S.W.A.T means special weapons and Tactics; bloodhounds are the avant guard dog for search and crime pursuit; SWAT are usually the last resort to curb an extreme crime situation; so We being the “SWAT and Bloodhounds” are the last line of defense of Hip-hop in Nigeria, at a time of skinny jeans, color blocking and over-proliferation of Azonto themed music; We, The 7 right here, defend Nigerian Hip-hop;
Also, Well, actually, the BET awards cypher also inspired it; Nigeria did her Rap Cypher presentation and it was not really solid apart from modenine and a couple of dem; so this song was the BE(S)T awards cypher they didn’t want The world to see!Loooool! The other six MCs I have on the song are Unarguably some of the most Ferocious MCs in Nigeria right now; and y’all better watch out for the Remix cuz I’m bringin the pain again!hahahaha!!!

Chygaga: When are we expecting the full infiltration mixtape to drop?

Cyrus: The Infiltration drops FINALLY on NOVEMBER 1ST, 2012; tell everybody to watch out, cuz I’m about to bring the most interesting Mixtape EVER out of Nigeria; its an eclectic mix of different style/genres; I’m never one that likes to be boxed into a corner so I really explored different styles so it will be a listeners delight all the way!

Chygaga: Has there been one particular moment in your musical career that you’re most proud of?

Cyrus: Yea! The day that I will never forget is the Glo show in Uniben a couple of years back; I was pitched on the bill alongside Hot (at that time) artistes like Faze, Ekwe stereoman, basketmouth; I had just dropped my 1st album “The Infection” and I didn’t know my song “very gbofty” was already dat big; the moment I started performing it, EVERYBODY, almost 15,000 to 20,000 strong crowd started singing it along word for word! The other artistes were very scared cuz they knew dey couldn’t top that performance! That was the day Edo state chose me as their 1st son, musically 🙂

CYRUS – SWAT & Bloodhounds

Chygaga: What’s next from Cyrus?

Cyrus: After Infiltration drops, I’ll shoot a couple of videos to promote it, go on tour, then start to select themes, beats, stories, concepts for my 3rd album THE ANTIDOTE… Cuz I’ve dropped THE INFECTION under Hex Records, THE REBELLION (independent release)…so I wanna drop THE ANTIDOTE and my final album will be NO CURE….you know, one step at a time and I hope God approves and I know, that I’ll be good…..

Chygaga: Are you currently signed to any Record Label?

Cyrus: Nope; I’m not; I’m still independently trying to push my works through my personal production outfit: A.R.R.O.W GANG/BLACK GORILLA ARMY until that big break comes, you know…

Chygaga: We have been in suspense about project ‘Arrow Gang’. When are you planning on revealing it to us?

Cyrus: Loooool! ARROW GANG means: ALLIANCE of REAL RAP, ORTHODOX WORDPLAY; its an assmeblage of like minds and talent; people who aint scared to be different; very soon, I shall unveil the who battle unit to yall….in due time and it will be the most talented, wildest, totally rambunctious, utterly stupefying, super-lyrical Rap Crew outta this continent…just watch *evil smile*

Chygaga: Let’s get personal, Are you currently in a serious relationship?

Cyrus: Yes I am…I’m in a fulfilling, beautiful relationship 🙂

Chygaga: What is your favorite meal combo?

Cyrus: My best food of life is pounded yam, efo riro soup and assorted meat!! And I’m a HUGE fan of dodo (fried plantain)……if they poison me, it will be through dodo!:(

Chygaga: What would you change about the current state of the Nigeria Music Industry if given the chance?

Cyrus: The perception that Las Gidi houses the best artistes in Nigeria; this is falsehood in its entirety; The musical talent in Nigeria is evenly spread…and of course, the perennial problem of piracy! Make una help us beg dem alaba guys to take it easy on us oh!! We need to feed off our works oh!:(

Chygaga: And finally, What’s your advice for young, up and coming musical artistes?

Cyrus: Always be DIFFERENT; in music, don’t try to do what’s already been done, do what’s NOT been done before; be DIFFERENT cuz Being different IS the DIFFERENCE!

The Coloured life

Posted on Updated on

The Coloured Life Initiative is a youth based initiative aimed towards encouraging an all round positive lifestyle for the Nigerian youth. It is geared towards creating a balance between the exuberant, fun-filled life that youths are drawn to and the responsible,value-filled life that the society needs them to lead.

The term “Coloured” was often used in referring to the black Americans in the late 19th and mid 20th Centuries.
What most people fail to recognize is that these blacks were extremely hard working and it was upon this hard work that the success of the western world was built.
Apart from these, the “Coloured” people were also responsible for the evolution of Hip Hop,which is the most popular genre of music today as well as a range of other music genres such as Afro.

Thus, The Coloured Life for a youth represents a wholesome life of hard work and responsibility as well as ability to have fun as that is a part of youth.
Be Good,Be Youth.

The Coloured Life Initiative Team is comprised of RESPONSIBLE,VALUE MINDED young people who are not afraid to have fun cos they are also youths.

Spreading the word that being a youth is not just about fun nor is it just about academics, but both in the right amounts can COLOUR up your life

The initiative will be bringing up projects such as “A THOUSAND VOICES” which will commence in October as well as “THE COLOUR MARCH” which will be held in December of this year (12:12:12).
