This Week On “RadioWaka Close Up”, Chygaga meets With the revered rap artiste A-Q

Chygaga: Hello A-Q

A-Q: Hello!

Chygaga: How did the name A-Q come about?

A-Q: A-Q came from the many questions hiphop who is the best, what is hiphop and what is not, what does the future hold for music hence the name, the
(A)= Answer,
(-)= to the
(Q)= question
A-Q means the answer to the question

Chygaga:  What are A-Q’s Full names?
Background? Academics?

A-Q: Real name Gilbert Bani,  2 brothers and 1 sister total of 4kids, my parents actually had six kids but we lost 2boys. Primary school attended Fountain school surulere,
Secondary attended Kings College Lagos,
University of lagos for tertiary education.

Chygaga: Thinking back to early childhood, what was your first experience with music for the first time like?  What song do you remember most as a child?

A-Q: My 1st experience with music was the music I heard my dad play as a child he liked Victor Uwaifo and Fela in the 80’s the music then was just different, stuck to ur memory for life, that was real music.

Chygaga:  Tell us a little about the concept behind The EP titled ‘ Make Your Best Rapper Look Stupid’

A-Q: The concept behind the title of my EP is more like a challenge to myself and to my colleagues/competitors.. Hiphop is a competitive art.. So in other to stay on top of my game I constanly challenge myself. In other to make a fans best rapper look stupid to him I have to deliver my best.. Not just in lyrics but the beats and song’s concept have to be a hundred percent.

Chygaga: Do you have other interests or talents you would like to share with us?  How do you like to enjoy your relaxation time away from the music?

A-Q: I have many other talents but the one apart from rapping I’m putting into use right now is script writing and movie production..
I’m part of the crew working on a new movie, its going to be really huge.. I wrote the script and hopefully they would let me produce it
cos I don’t think anyone can interpret the script better than I can as the author, don’t want to let the cat out of the bag about the movie yet but its going to be huge trust me.
For relaxation, I hardly ever relax. As an artiste that has been in the game for very long and has not achieved the heights he deserves, I take that anger out on constant work, if there must be pleasure it must be mixed with work or else I aint having it.. Maybe when I get more comfortable in my achievements in the future I could relax a little.

Chygaga: How long do you plan to make music and what are your long term goals in the music industry?

A-Q: I really don’t plan to rap for long, my plan is to set the platform for other talented artiste coming after me and put them on when nobody else will, hence I plan to own a large entertainment enterprise that would not only help musicians attain their goals but also fashion designers, artists, film makers etc basically any form of talent that doesn’t not require academic knowledge or sports.. Tops 5 albums and I’m done.

Chygaga: Which Nigerian artist(s) inspire you?

A-Q: In the past some nigerian artiste did inspire me but presently none.

Chygaga: I’ve listened to your new track “One day” where you featured 3 upcoming artists Butafly, Boogey & Koboko produced by Sencosonic. Awesome track I must say, but which one of them really impressed you as a rapper?

A-Q: The one day song was a track put together by the good people of
Radio Palmwine Ent it was a competition for upcoming rappers to showcase their talent and was actually recorded a while  ago.. The 1st 3 were to do a song with me which is what u heard as One day, I liked the idea of giving upcoming artiste a chance, so I tapped into it
immediately.
Who impressed me? Naturally I should say Boogey, but No, cos we all know by now what he is capable of, the rapper that not just impressed but surprised me was the female on the track ButaFly  being able to hold her own among 3 good male rappers, I liked her verse, but in general they all impressed me. Nigeria got talent.

Chygaga: Are you signed to any Record Label?

A-Q: I’m signed to myself I Co-own Hustle Inc with a partner.

Chygaga:  As an artist, how would you define SUCCESS?

A-Q:  Success in this music career to me is basically achieving all my dreams, till i achieve them I can’t count myself successful no matter
how much money or materialistic things I achieve, my dreams are not of wealth.

Chygaga:  What do you think your “biggest break” or “greatest opportunity” has been so far in your musical career?

A-Q: I don’t think I have had my biggest break yet or have had any break at all cos I have had to work for everything I am right now. Give me that one opportunity that many have had and I swear, the industry would never be the same again.

Chygaga: What are we expecting next from     A-Q?

A-Q:  Expect a lot of surprises and more good music that’s all I can say for now.

Chygaga: What do you think about the current state of the Nigeria Music Industry?

A-Q: The industry is at the best it has ever been and I can only pray it gets better, all we need right now are more investments, adequate
distribution, foreign assistance and to kill piracy, and music and entertainment as a whole would not just be the biggest export out of
Nigeria but could also be one of the biggest revenue generating industries in the country.

Chygaga: What’s your advice for other young, up and coming musical artistes?

A-Q: I have only one advice for up and coming acts, I have been through everything u are going through its hard to come  into the industry as a
newbie and make an impression but stay in that boat long enough and I promise you, you’d see where the land is.
Thank u very much for the opportunity.
